I’M A MATH TEACHER AGAIN!

The State of Iowa took my tentative math endorsement from me last year and fined me an amount of money that had more zeroes in it than I’d care to remember.

Why?

Mostly because I taught on an extension-of-an-extended administrative emergency endorsement after a series of awesome misunderstandings and hundreds of dollars in red tape.

They even had my district pay for a sub for me every day in my math classes just to make sure I wasn’t reverting to some horrifying werewolf-catfish creep-sickle due to my severe lack of math skills.

Being left alone with science students? Totally ok, evidently.

But, oh glorious day! Oh, sing-a-song-a-do day! I have finally completed the requirements for a full fledged class A endorsement (I effing hate grades, in all forms)

I was a Phoenix. FML

Turns out that General Relativity taught by a physics & astronomy department doesn’t count as “geometry.”

Tomorrow, I kid you not, a post about staring into the Sun.

ROFL. The endorsement story, not the fine story. Reminds me of UI’s insistence that I take their “business math” in the MBA program. Didn’t matter that I had 20+ credits in calc/diffEq. Nada credit for the ~110 credits of ME, EE, and CE classes I took on the way to an engineering degree. I asked to be able to take a higher level math class or an elective of my choice. Nope. The answer I got: “Your calc classes were more than 5 years ago. Therefore we cannot waive the business math requirement.” Okey dokey. So me and the other engineer in the class spent class time racing to see who could get the assigned homework done before the class was done. At least we entertained ourselves.

  • This is how deeply entrenched the system is in terms of its documentation and validation process. It assumes that your B- in a U of Phoenix class takes care of any concerns they had prior and has miraculously cured or at least innoculated you against “math mind rust”. I wonder if the sub they had sit in the class had taken this class or a corallary. . .

I had the same thing before I could start my Masters in Teaching. One course in Geometry. Because the concepts of Geometry are completely devoid in all of Calculus and above.

Curved spacetime? Puh-lease. Euclid don’t play that.

    Thanks for the chuckle.

It looks like that B- is a link. Do you mind posting what I assume is the list of assignments you completed along with the teacher’s detailed feedback? :-P
